John Brown

John Brown

Saxophone

John Brown began his music career in the 8th grade when he took drum lessons from DeMerle. He absorbed the styles of classic drummers Max Roach and Gene Krupa, but when he heard seminal improvising horn players like Cannonball Adderley, Johnny Hodges and John Coltrane,, he was inspired to move on to the saxophone. β€œI am a big fan of Coltrane’s β€œGiant Steps” album along with his version of β€œMy Favorite Things,” said Brown, who will enter the University of North Florida this fall with plans to major in Music Education.

β€œSince music education programs are disappearing from our schools, I feel compelled to make an effort towards reversing that trend,” he added. β€œThis kid will do well in whatever area of music he chooses,” said DeMerle. While in high school Brown was a member of the popular Rose Saxophone Quartet, which made numerous appearances in northeast Florida. β€œI do enjoy playing and sitting in with bands,” he said, β€œbut my focus now is on earning my college degree and ultimately teaching music.”

A not for profit 501c3 corporation, the Les DeMerle Amelia Island Jazz Festival distributes proceeds

I am so saddened to hear of David Sanborn’s passing. He gave us all so much great music and every note was played from the heart. In 2009 I was very fortunate to book and also play with David at our Amelia Island Jazz Festival. David performed his Ray Charles tribute album with my Hittin’ The Blue Notes Band which also featured my wife vocalist Bonnie Eisele-DeMerle and he delivered an incredible two night performance that raised the bar for our Festival.David was the real deal playing every note like it was his last. Thank you David for sharing your beautiful soul with the world. RIP dear friend. ... See MoreSee Less
