Jim Malmgren

A native of Shady Hills, Florida, Jim joined the United States Navy as a musician/trumpeter in 1984. During his 30 year career, his duty assignments included: SIXTH Fleet Band in Naples, Italy, Navy Band San Diego, Navy Band New Orleans, SEVENTH Fleet Band in Yokosuka, Japan, ATLANTIC Fleet Band in Norfolk, VA, Navy Band Southeast in Jacksonville, FL, instructor at the Navy School of Music in Little Creek, VA, and at the United States Naval Academy Band in Annapolis, MD. Jim has studied trumpet with Jazz legends Bobby Shew, Wayne Bergeron, Charley Davis, Steve Dillard, Gary Pack, and Eric Miyashiro. He has had the great fortune to perform on stage with Jon Faddis, Jeff Tyzik, Eric Miyashiro’s EM Big Band, Tom Pierson Big Band, Les DeMerle Big Band, The Fabulous Equinox Orchestra, Ben Vereen, The Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, Chris Thomas Band, New York Voices, Manhattan Transfer, Barry Manilow, The O’Jays, Terrell Stafford, Sadao Watanabe, Gordon Goodwin, Ellis Hall, Haute Chile Band, Dave Brubeck, Darlene Love, and The Harry James Orchestra.
Jim holds a BA in music from Thomas Edison State University. He currently resides in Jacksonville, Florida.
